List Of Video Game Anniversaries In 2014

Gaming anniversaries tend to creep up on people, so as soon as the year started I decided to comb Wikipedia’s gaming history sections to see what major game franchises began many years ago in five-year increments. Some of these have potential for pretty interesting events but most will probably be ignored by their publishers (like Silent Hill).

I’ll probably do anniversary blog posts for some of these, but for right now let’s speculate about what would be cool for the publishers to do and what they probably will do.

Shadow of the Best turns 25
Power Glove turns 25
Gauntlet turns 30
Akalabeth (possibly the first RPG video game ever) turns 35

Many of these franchises we already know have games coming out this year: Super Smash Bros., EverQuest, a new version of Street Fighter IV, inFamous, Sengoku Musou, Bayonetta (possibly), Dragon Age, Donkey Kong Country and Shadow of the Beast. So, those are pretty obvious. Their developers will probably just slap an anniversary logo somewhere in each game.

For a lot of these though it would be nice if they could at least announce a new game or something. People have been hoping Sony and From Software might announce Demon’s Souls 2 for the PS4 or something. The first game’s director is working on something other than Dark Souls II but we don’t know what, and a Demon’s Souls sequel would probably get me to buy a PS4. A really cool opportunity would be for Sony to bring Syphon Filter back to home consoles for a 15th anniversary announcement. It’s good potential for a stealth or third person shooter franchise that hasn’t had an entry built for consoles since the PS2 and hasn’t had a main numbered entry since the PS1.

The 2oth anniversary of the original arcade Killer Instinct is a nice opportunity to drop some new content for the Xbox One game.  For the 10th anniversary of Star Wars Battlefront I imagine EA and DICE will drop at least a little bit of new info on the upcoming game. Could Ubisoft have something in store for Prince of Persia’s 25th anniversary? The 15th anniversary of Shenmue seems pretty auspicious too. Particularly interesting is the double anniversary of Warcraft coming up: the 10th anniversary of World of Warcraft and the 20th anniversary of the whole Warcraft franchise. We know Blizzard has talked about re-releasing the first two games in a format playable on modern operating systems. But of course most auspicious is the upcoming 10th anniversary of Half-Life 2.

There are some really old games on the above list that could potentially also be re-released on services like GOG or Steam, similar to Warcraft. You got: TIE Fighter, the original System Shock, and maybe even Akalabeth.

  1. 2014 is the 20th anniversary of the international release of Daytona USA (it was released in 1993 in Japan), I wanted to point that out.

It’s also the 15th anniversary of the original arcade release of San Francisco Rush 2049, and the 20th anniversary of Cruis’n USA (not to mention the 15th anniversary of Cruis’n Exotica) and the 10th anniversary of the first three Raw Thrills arcade games (Target Terror, Target Terror Gold and The Fast and the Furious).

On the pinball side, we have the 15th anniversary of the last two games to come out of Williams Electronics, the Pinball 2000 twins of Revenge from Mars and Star Wars Episode 1, plus the 30th anniversary of Space Shuttle, and the 25th anniversary for Black Knight 2000 and Elvira and the Party Monsters, and I think it’s the 20th anniversary for Red and Ted’s Road Show and the Guns N’ Roses and Tommy pins from Data East. It’s also the 15th anniversary of the modern incarnation of Stern Pinball (this happened a couple of weeks before Williams exited pinball for good).
