Video Game Anniversaries That Will Occur in 2017

media_cloud_big

I really like doing these lists of upcoming anniversaries as my first blog post of each year. Doing the light research is a pretty fun trip back through gaming history, so here we go:

The only thing that immediately comes to me about 2017 anniversaries is the obvious fact that it’s the 10th anniversary of everything that came out in 2007, which was probably the most recent monumental year in game releases. 2007 really defined the current era of big budget console and PC games being made today. It’s when first person shooters hit a crossroads and were redefined for a whole console generation and beyond. It’s when some of today’s most important franchises debuted.

Biggest of all was probably Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which inspired a whole era of shooter design and really, the texture of how many modern games are structured and paced. The first Uncharted game may have had a hand in this. 2007 also saw what I consider to be the last truly ambitious, immersive first person shooters on PC: the original Crysis and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. There was the original Bioshock which also exposed the console audience to the style of shooter design favored by Looking Glass Studios and Irrational Games. Then there was PortalAssassin’s Creed, and Mass Effect of course.

2002 — 15 years ago, was also a very good year for video games if I recall, though not as monumental as 2001. I Before diving in though I don’t specifically remember much from that year other than the first Metroid Prime and the inaugural game of the Battlefield franchise: Battlefield 1942.

I remember 1997 being all about GoldenEye 007 and Final Fantasy VII, the latter of which Square Enix is trying to ship a remake in time for the anniversary. Actually, I think multiple major Japanese game publishers are prepping anniversary events for 2017. Square Enix is getting something ready for the 30th anniversary of the whole Final Fantasy franchise at the end of this month. Metal Gear turns 30 this year but who knows if Konami will do anything to mark that at this point.

Oh, and Pong will turn 45 this year.
