[E3 2016] How Will Iterative Consoles Change Market Share?

2016-06-13 (2)

As long as there have been rumors of the amount of horsepower Microsoft’s Project Scorpio boasts, I’ve seen interpretations that it is a response to the power gap that exists between the Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4. This sentiment seems to have intensified since Microsoft pretty much confirmed everything about Scorpio at E3. I’m not completely sure if addressing that power discrepancy is actually going to solve all Microsoft’s problems. Furthermore, if console manufacturers move towards the iterative upgrade model Scorpio is trying to initiate, then it might change the way market share shifts in the console industry. [E3 2016] Conference Round-Up

Legend-of-Zelda-Breath-of-the-Wild-Artwork-01-

I’m gonna see if I can cram all my thoughts from all Monday’s and Tuesday’s E3 2016 presentations, so I’ll try to keep each subject brief. I won’t go over every press conference, just the games I’m actually interested in playing (not necessarily the only ones I think look good) along with some more general thoughts. Continue reading

[E3 2016] Will EA’s New Shooters Feel New Enough?

e3-2016-titanfall-2-release-date-revealed_g13k.640

This is probably just a personal preference thing, but all the shooters Electronic Arts showed at its EAPlay press conference on Sunday (three in all) looked kind of… conventional to me.  That probably sounds crazy to a lot of people given the games are Star Wars, a game with giant robots, and a game about the first World War, but in all three I kind of see the same general structure of game design.

When EA first announced Battlefield 1, I did a post wondering if a change in setting was enough to really make the game feel different. I now ask the same question of Titanfall which is coming out basically in the same season and maybe Star Wars Battlefront 2 as well. What I’m saying is, I have a feeling that no matter what setting you get, it’s still gonna be shooting through linear set pieces in relative close quarters or deathmatch and conquest multiplayer. [E3 2016] How Does Deus Ex Stand Out In Today’s Market?

I just got done watching Square Enix’s Deus Ex pre-E3 demonstration, and everything the publisher is announcing during E3 seems to be the culmination of how it’s reconciling the nature of Deux Ex with the realities of today’s blockbuster game market. An article from Zam news criticizing Deus Ex: Mankind Divided as being a completely unoriginal amalgamation of everything popular in today’s console game market is pretty relevant in my opinion, even if I don’t completely agree with it and am still excited to play the game. [E3 2016] No E3 Predictions

E3-2016-donne-rendez-vous

It seems like E3 has kind of already kicked off with leaks and pre-E3 stream. In the past this might have been some kind of E3 predictions post but I’ve moved on from that kind of thing.

I don’t know if this is some kind of zen thing, but I’ve pretty much decided not to “expect” or “predict” anything from E3 this year. That’s not pessimism, that’s just me trying to let the proceedings flow. I won’t be disappointed, and if there are pleasant surprises then they’ll be pleasant surprises. Continue reading
