On Nioh: Nobody Ever Make RPGs About Feudal Japan

I didn’t get a PlayStation 4 until after the original alpha demo for Team Ninja’s Nioh had expired, and also couldn’t get in on the beta demo in time, so this “Last Chance Trial” was the first time I got to check the game out. Aside from the quality of the game itself, I just need to say I’m glad somebody based a deep role playing game on feudal Japan. Continue reading

Capcom And Modern Fighting Games

The March NPD report has been another hit of bad news to strike Street Fighter V. After the game’s disappointing commercial debut in February, it failed to chart in March. Worse, one fighting game that did chart was Pokken Tournament for the Wii U — a dead console. One comment from someone on NeoGAF who people seem to trust to know these things, suggests the debut numbers for Pokken may actually already be close to SFV’s lifetime sales. Producer Yoshinori Ono has already admitted Capcom underestimated how much the casual audience matters in fighting game sales today. I think SFV’s launch speaks to a deeper issue with regards to how Capcom has been approaching the fighting game genre since… well since 3rd Strike really. Continue reading

Just How Can You Predict Which Games Will Get PC Versions Today?

The announcement of a PC version of Azure Striker Gunvolt has me surprised and a little bit mad when it really shouldn’t have. The increasing publisher support of the PC, mostly through Steam, hasn’t quite reached the point where it’s ubiquitous and you can expect every third party game to end up on Steam. It is however reaching a point where you have to seriously think about the possibility with each individual game. The only discernible pattern of probability I can see is the publisher of each game.
