Why Some May Or May Not Find No Man’s Sky Repetitive

When I did my post on Friday about No Man’s Sky and its faults, I forgot to cover one specific area that might be the most important reason why it might get repetitive for some people.

I didn’t actually read any of the reviews (I’d already pre-ordered the game a few days before the reviews were published) so I don’t know if any of them covered this. I’ve you’ve played the game you probably already know about its severe balance issues. If you haven’t, here’s something else to consider when deciding whether or not to jump in. No Man’s Sky: What It Is, What It Isn’t, What It Was Supposed To Be, What I Wanted

So, No Man’s Sky. It’s out, it’s a real video game, people on the street are playing it, and there’s been a lot of controversy since it launched. I honestly don’t feel like I’ve played it quite enough to do an authoritative review or anything, but I’d rather not fall too far behind the discussion on this one.

The controversy surrounding how No Man’s Sky turned out in my opinion is stemming from three main areas: 1) What the game tries to be versus what people wanted it to be. 2) What Hello Games said would be in the game versus what’s actually in the game. 3) How this game’s creative vision might have been better executed given the first two points. What Actually Matters In Procedurally Generated Games

As we enter the final week before the launch of No Man’s Sky, online chatter around it get’s increasingly heated. The posts from supposedly the sole person on Earth outside Hello Games playing a retail copy haven’t dampened things in the slightest. One source of all the skepticism is the fact that the game uses procedural generation and how it doesn’t force players to an end goal. This new trend of never-ending procedurally generated games seems to be getting some pushback from those who prefer static level design and endings. Late To The Party: Survival Games (The Long Dark)

I’ve never played survival games before: the ones that sort of took over Steam Early Access and got popular with streamers like Rust, DayZ7 Days To DieArk: Survival Evolved, or The Forest. I’ve never even played Minecraft for any significant amount of time. Right before the recent Steam Summer sale ran out I saw The Long Dark for $7 and decided to give that a shot since it seems to be the most highly praised one.

After a few hours and a couple lengthy attempts to survive in its sandbox, what I see here is a pretty well-formulated simulation game, even if it isn’t entirely my kind of thing. Though I am now wondering if other survival games might have a flow that is more my kind of thing. Continue reading

How I Feel About The “Most Anticipated Games” of 2016 — Halfway Through The Year

We’re almost halfway into 2016 and taking a look at the lineups of late May and all of June I also took a look back at what I wrote back at the end of January. In terms of big releases I’m not sure this year is going to be as good as 2015 was but it’s still going to be better than 2014 or 2013. We’re out of the AAA slump as developers have eased into the existing hardware. I’m still in hype mode for almost nothing though. Continue reading

What’s Behind The Cost Of Games: Part Two

In the responses I’ve seen to No Man’s Sky being priced the same as Uncharted 4 or The Division, people seem to be trying to get to the heart of what actually constitutes a $60 video game. In February I tried to put down some thoughts about the factors that might go into it. After looking at all this I think there are two very important ways in which No Man’s Sky goes against everything customers have come to believe about $60 games, one of which people are discussing and one of which I haven’t really seen mentioned at all. Exploration So Far In Elite Dangerous

I just crossed the 60-hour mark in Elite Dangerous and even though I don’t consider myself qualified to fully critique it or games like it, I think it’s time I at least put down some observations and general things I’d like to see Frontier Developments improve or change. If you’re one of those people who are still curious or pessimistic about No Man’s Sky, this post might help better inform your expectations of that game.

Even though I’ve done a few posts in the past on PC space flight games, I’m still not really “in-tune” with that genre. I don’t have a great idea of what fans of the “Fight, Trade, Explore” style space game expect from Elite Dangerous or games like it. I don’t know how it scales up compared to games of the past or similar games being made today. More importantly, I haven’t really interacted with other people playing this game so I don’t know what the common grievances have been. Elite Dangerous feels a lot like what I experienced in Frontier: Elite II but with more accessible controls I guess. Still, after 60 hours I find myself wishing for certain things in Dangerous. Consider this a critique with some suggestions from an average newcomer to the series and genre.

Everything I’m about to say has mainly to do with exploration in Elite Dangerous. I haven’t really done trading or bounty hunting at all so I have no idea how those aspects of the game have turned out. I’ve spent pretty much all my time exploring and scanning star systems, so I’m just critiquing what that experience feels like here. Continue reading

How I Feel About The “Most Anticipated Games” of 2016

I don’t know if there are more than maybe a couple games of 2016 that I’m really, truly anticipating. I’ve started thinking about that as we approach the end of January without my having bought a single new game. There are quite a few games I’m probably going to buy, but that feeling of actually “needing” a game is extremely rare to me these days. Planet-Searching In Space Engine

Despite not really being a “game” at this stage, Space Engine has become probably one of my “most played games” of 2015 since installing it earlier this year. It’s taken me a while, but I’ve been slowly learning to use its interface to navigate its star systems, and having a lot of fun while doing so.
