The Faithfulness And Artistry of The “Shadow of the Colossus” Remake


Shadow of the Colossus is one of my top games of all time. It’s my “desert island game.” I’ve probably completed it close to 20 times and closely examined its art over the decade plus since its original release. So of course I had the special edition of the PlayStation 4 remake pre-ordered, but I was also one of the people more anxious about how faithful a different art and development team would be to the original 2005 PlayStation 2 version.

Many video games get remakes because of the inherently technical nature of the medium and industry. Most people think that with most games simply tossing in more silicon, adding finer details, and implementing more realistic lighting will always improve the experience. Colossus in particular is known as a game that was let down by the hardware of its time. The PS2 version runs sluggishly, and it fakes a lot of visual effects that aren’t suppose do be possible on the PS2. Arguably it’s exactly the kind of game that needs a remake.

Colossus however is also mostly known for its art direction and atmosphere. It was distinct in 2005 and remains distinct today. It’s a very delicate thing that wouldn’t be easy for an entirely different group of people to maintain while adding details with a system two hardware generations and a decade removed from the original version.

There are even a few articles out bringing up some good points about the act of even trying to add detail to a game like Colossus: One from USGamer alleges that the PS4 version looks too much like other video games now. Another from Eurogamer (same parent company) alleges that adding a bunch of detail turns the PS4 version into an inherently different experience that can’t erase the original.

Before my PS4 copy arrived from Amazon I went back through the PS2 version for the first time in years (on a standard definition CRT in fact). After a single run through the PS4 game, I think I half agree with the aforementioned articles. There is a push and pull between the two versions, but the PS4 version makes some significant achievements even as its own game. Continue reading

What Q1 2017 Means, And Zelda’s Use Of Geography


My time over the last few weeks has been taken up by Zelda and a few other relatively big things going on in my life. I guess I can take a moment though to at least say something about my time with Zelda and look back at what has been an uncommonly good first quarter of the year in video games.

It almost feels like a fall release schedule in that there has simply been too much new stuff for any one person to play thoroughly, between Gravity Rush 2Yakuza 0Resident Evil 7NiohNier: AutomataHorizon: Zero DawnMass Effect: Andromeda, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. What’s interesting to look at though is that it has been an uncommonly good quarter for console games. Of what I mentioned, only RE7, Nier, and Andromeda have PC versions. If I’d been able to play these games I would have actually gotten some use out of my consoles. Possibly more important though is that this quarter likely signifies 2017 as sort of the year Japanese console games came back. Continue reading

What Separates Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Horizon: Zero Dawn From Other Games?

PlayStation Experience 2016: Maintaining The Status Quo


Sony had a pretty good showing at PlayStation Experience 2016, even though a lot of it was really more of what the company showed off last year. Overall, Sony’s last few large game presentations have just solidified the main difference between it and Microsoft that has probably existed since the later part of the previous console generation: first and third party exclusives.

Sony definitely showed off big new reveals like The Last of Us Part IIUncharted The Lost Legacy, Wipeout Omega Collection, or the remasters, but a good chunk of the show was just more footage of what we saw last year. We got new Yakuza games (in English), more footage of Ace Combat 7Ni No Kuni IIGravity Rush II, that Nier sequel, Gran Turismo Sport, and so-on. Continue reading

Sony Still Believes In Traditional Console Generations


Eurogamer’s latest article on the PlayStation 4 Pro — an interview with PS4 architect Mark Cerny, is a beefy rundown of everything Sony did with the Pro and also how it relates to the basic PS4. An important part of it to note however is that it clarifies Sony’s current stance on hardware transitions, which actually kind of goes counter to what I’d been guessing might happen. Rez Infinite And Re-Buying Classics On Console vs PC


Rez Infinite is up for pre-order on PlayStation Network now, and for a little while the limited physical version has been up for pre-order over at Iam8bit. I’m finding myself hesitant to do so, and it’s not just because I don’t like pre-ordering games weeks or months out (there’s almost no reason to anymore).

I’ve seen lots of people accuse publishers of using remasters of games from previous console generations to pad out their release calendars for PS4 and Xbox One. Normally I’m all for these re-releases since not everyone got to play these games around their original releases or owns a bunch of older consoles. It’s like movies being re-released on Blu-Ray. Maybe I’m hesitant with Rez specifically because I’ve bought it twice before. Continue reading

Ico After 15 Years, Last Guardian Expectations


As we head into fall 2016 we head into the 15th anniversary of fall 2001, which was a pretty major year in video gaming. Two console launches, and the absolutely monster lineup of exclusives for the PlayStation 2. One console will probably never again get so many major exclusives in such a short amount of time. Until Dawn, Adventure Games, and Console vs PC Graphics


Another game I checked out to catch up on the PlayStation 4 is what will probably be my only run through Until Dawn. Word-of-mouth gave me the notion it was basically “what if a David Cage game had better writing?” Its grasp of the kind of story it tries to tell in an interactive way does it a great service and makes it something unique even among adventure games, though it could still learn a few things from adventure games. Until Dawn is also possibly one of the best showcases of what consoles are still capable of, but not in the way you might think. How Consumers Should Approach The Upgraded Console Future


So now we know what Sony is offering with the PlayStation 4 Pro and it’s… the same console with UHD streaming and better performance for the same games. On twitter I’m seeing mixed reactions but whether or not the upgrade is worth it depends heavily on what each consumer’s situation is. From the beginning I’ve been saying that these upgraded consoles won’t be for everyone just like everyone doesn’t upgrade to every new iPhone model.
