Your Dungeon-Looting Preference: Part Two

the-division-gameplay-1024x576

Over the last several months I’ve been trying Tom Clancy’s: The Division on and off, and with Destiny 2 coming along I guess I can talk about loot-oriented action RPGs again. I might have use for a new one, but I think I’m conflicted about The Division. Continue reading

Which Games Do New Game+ The Best?

horizon-zero-dawn-screen-01-ps4-us-13jun16

Among the changes Horizon Zero Dawn is getting with its 1.30 update is a New Game+. I feel like that feature is sort of coming back a little bit and developers are only just now realizing its benefits. It’s really a wonder why more games aren’t doing it.

I’m not gonna go counting but I feel like New Game+ is one of those things that was more common in the heyday of original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, and then was forgotten in the rush for more heavily scripted linear games. I remember New Game+ being a notable inclusion in Dead Space back in 2008, and we’re starting to see it slip back into relevance with popular games like The Witcher 3. Like HorizonDishonored 2 has had New Game+ added post-launch. Continue reading

[E3 2017] Capcom’s Big Risk With Monster Hunter World

Monster-Hunter-World-Boxart

One story of controversy from E3 2017 has been Capcom’s announcement of Monster Hunter World. It’s the next mainline entry in a franchise that’s probably one of Capcom’s main revenue sources, but it seems to be abandoning the platforms that made it popular. Some fans are not pleased, and it seems Capcom is taking a big risk by changing the nature and platform of the game. Continue reading

What Separates Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Horizon: Zero Dawn From Other Games?

the_legend_of_zelda_breath_of_the_wild-8

With lots of hype comes lots of scrutiny. As of this writing I haven’t touched either Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Sony’s Horizon: Zero Dawn, and before I (or you) do I think it would be good to examine that scrutiny and think about what each game needs to do to rise above it. On Nioh: Nobody Ever Make RPGs About Feudal Japan

maxresdefault

I didn’t get a PlayStation 4 until after the original alpha demo for Team Ninja’s Nioh had expired, and also couldn’t get in on the beta demo in time, so this “Last Chance Trial” was the first time I got to check the game out. Aside from the quality of the game itself, I just need to say I’m glad somebody based a deep role playing game on feudal Japan. Continue reading

Final Fantasy XV and Modern Japanese RPGs

final-fantasy-xv-noctis-gladio-ignis-prompto

I was able to take a bit of time out to play the first few hours of Final Fantasy XV, and I’m a bit surprised at how much tries to feel like modern big-budget role playing games while preserving many of the common tenets of traditional Japanese RPGs. I don’t know if this game has had a polarized reception, but overall I like the direction of what I’ve seen so far. I just don’t really know how it lands the execution of its ideas compared to similar games. Continue reading

Mass Effect Andromeda’s Marketing So Far Just Isn’t For Me.

ces-2017-screenshot-03

The new footage of Mass Effect: Andromeda from Nvidia’s CES 2017 keynote looks okay I guess. For Mass Effect fans who are less interested in shooting aliens than in other popular aspects of the franchise, EA’s marketing for the game so far has been odd. The game comes out on March 21st and the level of hype in the air feels decidedly light for such a big release. Continue reading

Skyrim Mods I Used That New Players Should Try

9518d8e8

Basically everybody is talking about what mods you should try for Skyrim Special Edition. I’m not gonna try to add another general list of the best mods or whatever, but I thought I’d go ahead and point out what I used when I decided to start modding up the original version of Skyrim. Most of what I installed were the well-known mods everybody else might be suggesting but maybe some are lesser-known mods that I still think are pretty useful. Continue reading

Something Peculiar About Deus Ex Mankind Divided

dxmd-header-0

I’m pretty far behind on the big games of 2016. I let go of always having to stay on top of the latest thing, so I only started Deus Ex Mankind Divided around the end of September I believe. As I take my time through the game though I’m noticing an odd oversight Eidos Montreal made that some of the reviews don’t mention.

I imagine the reviews don’t mention this because the critics had to run straight through the game’s critical path to get it done in time. For the same reason I don’t have to play all the big games right as they come out I, like most normal consumers, have been able to just mess around in the sole hub area in Mankind Divided. As of this writing after about 15 hours of gameplay I haven’t even started the first mission of the main story. Continue reading

Revisiting Tales of Symphonia, PC Port Progress, Sales Pitch, etc.

4541276_640px

Tales of Symphonia was one of those games I always wanted to see show up on PC so I wouldn’t have to worry about buying it on another console in the future, but the PC version we got started out as not only a disappointing remaster, but riddled with bugs and missing features. Namco and one very deidcated modder have apparently put more post-launch work into it than most people anticipated. Namco even went so far as to give it a free weekend during its publisher-wide Steam sale to bring attention to that, and I guess it worked enough for me to buy the game after trying it for a few hours. Continue reading
