The Difference Between PS4, Xbox One, and Switch 1st Party Games

horizon-zero-dawn-tallneck

Quarter one of 2017 has been pretty good for first party exclusive console games, particularly from Sony but also for Nintendo if you count one incredible game. In the midst of this I’ve also heard a lot of talk that one reason Microsoft is behind Sony in console sales is because its lineup of exclusives is weaker. What’s interesting is if you look at the first party lineups of each console manufacturer you see different strategies or a preference for games with different kinds of business models. Continue reading

Capcom And Modern Fighting Games

07_chunli_throw

The March NPD report has been another hit of bad news to strike Street Fighter V. After the game’s disappointing commercial debut in February, it failed to chart in March. Worse, one fighting game that did chart was Pokken Tournament for the Wii U — a dead console. One comment from someone on NeoGAF who people seem to trust to know these things, suggests the debut numbers for Pokken may actually already be close to SFV’s lifetime sales. Producer Yoshinori Ono has already admitted Capcom underestimated how much the casual audience matters in fighting game sales today. I think SFV’s launch speaks to a deeper issue with regards to how Capcom has been approaching the fighting game genre since… well since 3rd Strike really. Continue reading

Fighting Game Season 2015 And The Path For Newbies

x_GuileRyu

The Evolution tournament this year seems to have turned late July every year into that period when more people than usual start talking about fighting games. It’s kind of like soccer for Americans whenever the world cup comes around. I imagine it’s also the season when a lot of people start talking about how they want to start playing fighting games before giving up a month later.

Capcom even seems to be helping some people along by putting Ultra Street Fighter IV on a free weekend on Steam along with a $10 sale. Sony’s having a fighting game sale on PSN too. If you are one of those people who might get caught up in the net this year I think I can lay out what I’ve found to be a nice path to fighting game literacy. Maybe not competitive-level playing, but just literacy. Continue reading

Nintendo Direct Did Not Make Me More Excited For 3DS

Before the latest Nintendo Direct I was contemplating if I was almost done with mainstream support of the 3DS. Now I know I very nearly am.

Now this is pretty much all a matter of personal preference on my part. There was a lot for people to enjoy for the system in this week’s Nintendo update. I’m just not one of those people. Probably not in 2015 anyway. My priority will likely switch completely to the Wii U. Continue reading

Holiday 2014 Local Multiplayer Checkup

“I do think that consoles trying to concentrate on online rather than local multiplayer will be remembered as a huge mistake.”

— Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw of Zero Punctuation in a VICE interview

I’m pretty sure Thanksgiving and holiday family gatherings played a role in Nintendo’s planning the release date for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Last year I talked about how these new consoles stack up when it comes to local multiplayer at a time when it might be most prevalent. I’m gonna take just a little bit of time this year to check in on this again along with local multiplayer on PC, which is a steadily rising thing. Continue reading

The Value Of Midnight Launches

BxX2DpwCMAEDv66

After stating how rarely I buy games at launch or at full price, it’s not hard to assume I even more seldom go to midnight launches anymore. Going to the one for Super Smash Bros. on 3DS has me reexamining the value of them. Some value can still be found, depending on why you go. Continue reading
